Infrastructure

Douglas Street

In the summer of 2006, Saanich crews began work on the sidewalk extension promised for Douglas Street (from Rogers to Cameo). This will provide a safer route to schools and a safer pedestrian environment. The first stage was completed, running from Lily to Cameo.

In fall 2007 Saanich completed phase two of the sidewalk, from Lily to Genevieve. This stretch has a concrete sidewalk separated from the road by a swale and concrete curbing. It is a very attractive and well-used amenity.

Spring 2008 sees Saanich crews working on the next phase, between Genevieve and Chesterlea. Some residents have lost frontage to their properties, but it is a fair trade-off for this long-awaited improvement.

Cedar Hill X Road

As part of traffic calming and pedestrian safety initiatives, Saanich crews installed a turning circle at the intersection of Cedar Hill X Road as well as several speed humps and raised crosswalks on the road between Nicholson and Borden.

Also, speed humps were installed on Ambassador Street, McBriar Street and Nicholson Street.

From Previous: A consultant has been working on developing a Transportation Plan for the North Quadra Area, as a follow-up to the earlier Safer City survey, and in conjunction with city staff and two Association representatives.  If the recommendations as currently envisioned are implemented, these may have a significant impact on our neighbourhood!  Please make sure you familiarize yourself with the material.  A pamphlet was distributed by mail in early November which is also available on the consultant's web site (actually, the web version is easier to read because it is in colour).  The next step will likely be the presentation to Council, leading to formal public hearings.

Beckwith Avenue

After many years of asking, the Traffic Light was installed at the intersection of Quadra and Beckwith, allowing traffic to move safely into Quadra Street.

Saanich Engineering determined in 2005 that volume of traffic indicated that this intersection had passed the technical warrant for a signal. With the increased traffic from Beckwith Park and the number of children taking the bus to the middle schools, as well as the traffic surveys that were returned to the Neighborhood Transportation Management Plan all indications, it was clear that this intersection was a high priority.
