Bruce Hutchison Park

About the Park

It is worth noting that this natural park, once owned and named after Bruce Hutchison – a renowned Canadian journalist, author, member of the Order of Canada and Freeman of Saanich, among other distinctions – would not exist today had it not been so well preserved in its natural parklike state for decades.  The park consists of several large rock outcroppings and a winding Garry oak, native wildflower trail that wends adjacent to the Bruce Hutchison Heritage Home on Roger’s Ave.

Park Updates

"Pulling Together" Volunteer Team

March 2024 Update - Katie Steward (Saanich Pulling Together Coordinator)

A small (3-5) and committed group of volunteers meets here twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays), led by one lead steward volunteer.  Stewardship work has focused on removing ivy from trees, and ivy mats from the ground, allowing existing native vegetation to flourish in this Garry oak habitat. A large blackberry thicket was also removed and replanted with staff assistance.  This restoration area will be a work in progress for many years, but evidence of larger and growing expanses of Camas, Fawn Lilies and flowering Hooker’s Onion occur yearly, thanks to the dedicated work of this team!
