Vic Derman Park

About the Park

Vic Derman Park consists of hiking trails, expansive natural green spaces containing rare and endangered deep soil Garry Oak groves, and open meadows of springtime native wildflowers. The main trail leads to Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary with access from Rogers Way or Rainbow Street.   The park, originally named Christmas Hill Park, was renamed Vic Derman Park in 2017 to honour the late Saanich Councillor. Vic Derman, an avid cyclist and tireless community advocate who championed many causes relating to sustainability, creation of parklands (including the lower Christmass Hill meadow), climate change mitigation, smart growth and livable, affordable communities.

"Pulling Together" Volunteer Team

January 2024 Update - Peter Walkers (Park Steward)

Work at 3.29-hectare Vic Derman Park continues to focus on protecting its Garry Oak ecosystem and restoring and expanding the native camas field. To do that, volunteers remove Himalayan blackberry, Scotch broom, daphne, thistles, ivy, Queen Anne's Lace, dandelions, bluebells, cyclamen and other invasive plant species year-round. Saanich Parks staff then re-plant selected areas with native species and monitor them to see which plants thrive in specific locations. In 2023, Parks Construction staff built earthworks to protect adjacent properties from water run-off during extreme weather events, while retaining the park's natural character. Saanich staff and volunteers continue to work closely with the students and teachers at neighbouring Rogers Elementary, providing opportunities for learning about ecosystem restoration.

For the last 7 years Lead Steward, Peter Walters, has worked tirelessly and at times single handedly (especially during Covid) to enhance and restore Vic Derman Park’s ecology and trail system.  He continues to steer work parties of volunteers to assist in the park’s ongoing restoration.  Last spring NQCA presented Peter with their “Community Volunteer of the Year'' award in recognition of his leadership and service to North Quadra.
